  • "Donkeys live a long time. None of you has has ever seen a dead donkey..(21)"

    Character Parallel to history:

Benjamin is a wise donkey, he is compared to the wise people in Russia. He has not changed since the rebellion. The wise people in Russia were not sure that the revolution was going to change anything. Basically that means that they stayed the same because they did not think that anything would change.

Snowball: Trotsky. Snowball is more of the talker, and is more inventive than Napoleon.
Actions and their parallels: Creates committees in order to help the animals (Russians) with production of goods and education (new government)

Napoleon: Stalin. Napoleon is the quieter one, who still gets his way through other means.
Actions and their parallels: Took the pups (kids) as soon as they were born and started to teach them. Neither have been seen since.

Squealer: Representation of newspaper. Gives out the news to all other animals on farm.
Actions and their parallels: Sent to tell all other animals (Russians) through his voice (newspaper) of what is going on between the leaders.
external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSWkeryHH-mn-PNb3q0WhbVvnYCGOTlvbSJqFGsWBqx7linWC55iA Quote: "Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us."

Napoleon Vs. Snowball
There can never be two leaders. Even though these two claim to have been best friends one has always had more power over the other. Based on the fact that Napoleon dislikes Snowball's committee shows who has more power. This is showing that Napoleon is going to try to kill Snowball in the long run. Comparing these two to people in history they are Stalin and Trotsky. Stalin killed his own best friend (Trotsky) because he wanted to be the ONLY leader.

Representation of most animals not being able to read

The representation is that the Russian people can be easily persuaded by the newspaper(which was taken over by Stalin and used to persuade the people), and what is heard from the pigs (Trotsky and Stalin). Without the ability to read, the Russian people will look for a leader who will tell them what they want to hear. Unfortunately, the leader will not always live up to what they say they will do. That is what causes problems, such as very strict rules and a dictator-like leader, which Stalin created while being the leader of Russia.

Significance of Squealer's talk about apples & milk

  • "Surely there is no one among you who wants to see Mr. Jones come back?(25)"- Squealer tries to attack their emotions

Pigs are gaining the power because they are the most educated animals on the farm. Squealers simply explains a lie to the other animals to make the pigs look good. He made the other animals look at the situation in a different perspective, so that they will not try to rebel against the pigs. The significance of Squealer talking to the other animals is Stalin's(Napoleon's) key to propaganda for the Soviet Union(the farm).

Significance of speeches:

Squealer's speech about the usage of the apples and milk tells how the pigs manipulate all the other animals using their words and clever abilities. The milk that was stolen was found to be mixed into the pigs' mash, and no one else's. This makes the farm suspicious as to why the pigs did this. All the pigs, including Snowball and Napoleon were in agreement with the apples and milk being only for themselves. Napoleon (Stalin) used Squealer (the newspaper he ran) in order to conjure up an explanation as to what the pigs' motives were. Squealer tries to use science as to explain why the milk and apples are for the pigs by saying they "contain substances absolutely needed by pigs" and that "the whole management and organisation of this farm depends on us". By playing to the illiteracy of the animals, using that weakness to their advantage and mixing in scary thoughts of Jones returning, the explanation was taken in by the animals. Furthermore, the pigs contradict themselves in the speech. Squealer states: "Comrades! You do not imagine, i hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples." However, the pigs all agree that they should be, and are the ones who are getting all of the milk and apples in the end.
